With school starting on Monday, August 19th, 2024, the team at Reyes Dental Group want to share a friendly reminder to schedule your child’s back to school dental check-up. Our goal is to identify and address potential dental issues early, from cavities to alignment problems, to ensure your child’s smile is healthy for the school year.
What to Expect at the Dental Checkup
Here’s what you and your child can expect during their visit to our Lorton practice:
Dental Exam: Dr. Reyes will conduct a detailed examination of your child’s teeth and gums to spot any issues that could cause problems later.
Professional Cleaning: Our wonderful dental hygienists will clean your child’s teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup to keep their smile bright and healthy.
Fluoride Treatment: To further protect against cavities, we apply a fluoride treatment that strengthens tooth enamel.
In addition to your back to school check-up, we highly recommend scheduling your regular check-ups throughout the year for the whole family to ensure you keep yours and your family’s teeth healthy over the course of the year.
Other things you can do in the year to ensure healthy teeth is by providing your child with healthy snacks like vegetables, fruit, cheese and yogurt. We also highly recommend making sure they are well-hydrated and do not consume sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice.
We understand that weekends are full of birthday parties and celebrations as your child grows up with a lot of temptation for sugary treats, however Dr. Reyes’s special trick is to offer your child a carrot stick and having a glass of water after eating a slice of cake or eating chips or crackers that get stuck in their teeth to help reduce the chance of getting cavities.
If your child is involved in contact sports, we recommend getting a custom mouth guard. Although an over-the-counter option will work ok, a custom guard is much more comfortable for your child and will ensure they actually wear it. We can also customize it with their favorite color.
